1 - PAR 4 | 386 YDS
The curtain-raiser at Shaker Hills provides a friendly start, with a generous landing area in a wide fairway that bends slightly to the left and rises gently to a medium-sized green.
2 - PAR 5 | 535 YDS
Standing on the elevated second tee 60 feet above the landing area the player is treated to a commanding view of this firm but fair beauty. Long hitters can reach in two, but most players need to follow their drive with a fairway wood and a high iron.
3 - PAR 3 | 210 YDS
One of the most beautiful and demanding holes in New England, No. 3 is one of the signature holes at Shaker Hills. A wide, shallow green offers an inviting target from an elevated, five-tier tee. Sand awaits long shots, and a small pond lurks to the left to snare off-line birdie-bids. Club selection can range from lofted woods to mid-irons.
4 - PAR 4 | 466 YDS
Nothing tricky here, just hit it long… twice… to reach an unguarded green framed nicely by tall pines. Downhill fairway provides a little help in negotiating this lengthy par 4.
5 - PAR 5 | 606 YDS
And speaking of length, how about this mammoth three shotter: 606 yards… and it’s all uphill! Nobody gets home in two - nobody! Even some long hitters may need to use three woods to reach this green (as in hitting a wood three times vs. hitting a 3 wood!”
6 - PAR 3 | 185 YDS
The sixth offers some welcome relief in the form of a friendly, downhill par three. Once again, multiple tees provide interesting approaches to a receptive green, but don’t be long to the right.
7 - PAR 4 | 373 YDS
Success at lucky 7 is related as much to nerves as to skill. the green is within reach after your drive, but you discover that water guards your approach to the left. For the safety-conscious, there’s a bail-out area to the right of the green, but it will take a deft chip on a sloping surface to get its close.
8 - PAR 4 | 416 YDS
Another wonderful golf hole and another Shaker Hills signature, Number 8 winds its way through trouble, exacting a terrible price for greed and recklessness. Narrow landing area is flanked by water on the left and bunkers on the right.. A good drive leaves an uphill approach with a long iron to a well-guarded green.
9 - PAR 4 | 372 YDS
Shaker Hill’s first act curtain is a non-threatening par four, that is, until you need to hit your ball onto the elevated green, which drops off sharply at the back. Discretion in the form of a bump-and-run approach may yield better results than the valor of a lofted approach.
10 - PAR 4 | 412 YDS
The incoming nine begins with a trio of par fours that provide an interesting study in contrast. The tenth is an uncomplicated, straightaway par 4, and the tee-to-green trip is not particularly menacing.
11 - PAR 4 | 410 YDS
Another of Shaker Hill’s elevated tee complexes overlooks the valley that serves as the landing area fro this tester. From there, it takes a crisply-struck medium iron for an uphill approach to an elusive target.
12 - PAR 4 | 395 YDS
Number 12 can be a drive on the wild side. It measures only “395″ yards, and you can see all the way to the green from an elevated tee. The plateaued fairway bends right and is honed up along the right by a rock wall (fittingly called the Stone Wall of Sorry!) that outlines a waste area. Players are invited to bite off a s much of the dogleg as they dare. No place for pride or greed.
13 - PAR 3 | 164 YDS
The 13th tee stands 90 feet above the fairway and commands a breathtaking view of central Massachusetts countryside, with Mount Wachusett in the distance. Once the sightseeing is over, it takes a high iron from this lofty perch to reach the large green below. Check the wind before selecting a club.
14 - PAR 4 | 315 YDS
You needn’t be long for this little tester, but you’d better be straight off the tee. Fairway bends left and a drive that strays too far left will have to contend with an outcropping of ledge. You might want to leave your driver in the bag and hit something safe. Small plateaued green is flanked by bunkers.
15 - PAR 5 | 563 YDS
Most players will need three shots to get home on this lengthy par 5 because the green is tucked in a corner and is fronted by wetlands area. A judicious lay up leaves a high iron approach to a large amphitheater green.
16 - PAR 3 | 230 YDS
The 16th is the last of the on-shotters and, at 230 yards from the Gold markers, it presents a prodigious challenge. birdies on this not-so-little beauty are a rarity.
17 - PAR 4 | 352 YDS
The 17th is a modest par 4 that plays straightaway with no particular threats. Take advantage of this breather to rest up for the 18th, which is destined to become one of the truly memorable finishing holes anywhere.
18 - PAR 4 | 460 YDS
Welcome to the 18th tee! You’re almost home, but there’s a little work left. First chore is to carry your drive over a large waste area, then you need to plan your next shot around an outcropping of ledge which splits the fairway. All in all, a fitting conclusion to a truly memorable golfing experience.
